My boyfriend started saying "xoxo" what does it mean?

i don't mean to sound dumb or immature, i'm 18 and my boyfriend is 22. Long story short we have been together for about a month and a half now, and before bed we text and say our goodnights and such and normally he says stuff like "goodnight baby mwah mwah." but within the past 2 nights or so he has been adding "xoxoxoxo" to that. i was wondering if that meant anything ? neither have us have said "i love you yet" ive almost accidentally said it a few times, and i can tell he is close to saying it too, but me being the girl i don't want to say it first and scare him off. i read somewhere that xo symbolizes love, so is that his way of trying to say i love you without coming right out and saying it? one time he was trying to convince me to come hang out with him, but i was hesitant because i was sick, and he said "please come see me, i'll love you forever." i felt like that was him trying to say it without saying it as well. i'm not good with this stuff, so i'm not sure what it means.
